ARVADA, Colo.--In recent months the United Church of God published its third and fourth new booklets of the year, Why Does God Allow Suffering? and Is There Really a Devil?

The first, in a 16-page magazine format, focuses on cause and effect, Satan's role in human affairs and why the world needs God's Kingdom. Written by Noel Hornor, an elder serving in Portland, Ore., Why Does God Allow Suffering? is the 26th booklet the church has published.

Just over 24,000 copies were printed as an insert in the May-June issue of the church's magazine, The Good News, for less-expensive distribution, and 20,000 more copies were printed as a separate booklet to offer to the public.

The second booklet, Is There Really a Devil?, was published in a smaller 48-page booklet format. It discusses the magnitude of Satan's deception, his influence on humanity, his origins and what prophecy reveals about his activities in the end time. Forty thousand copies were printed.

With the completion of these booklets, the United Church of God has printed or reprinted 258,000 booklets in the first seven months of this year, a total greater than it printed in the entire years of 1996, 1997 or 1998.

The print run of the July-August Good News totaled 378,000, an increase of 15,000 over last issue and 93,000 more than a year ago. Over many months the magazine has added more than 1,000 new subscribers every week. These increases have come on top of a renewal program by which thousands of subscribers who were no longer interested were dropped.

The church also recently printed 60,000 copies of a special edition of The Good News for new subscribers and requests for gift copies. With these recent printings The Good News averaged a print run of just over the 325,000 average print run planned and budgeted for its July 1June 30 fiscal year.
