Houston Fellowship announces speakers for 1999

HOUSTON, Texas--Longtime Church of God member C. Wayne Cole is slated to speak in Houston at a special Sabbath service Feb. 13. The event, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Valencia Room at the Radisson Suite Hotel Houston West on Interstate 10 West at Beltway 8, is the second in a monthly series sponsored by the Houston Church of God Fellowship to promote interaction and fellowship among members of various Church of God groups.

An early Ambassador College graduate, Mr. Cole served in the Worldwide Church of God from the early 1950s until 1978 and oversaw church administration in Australia and Canada and the WCG's Pasadena, Calif., headquarters.

Since leaving church employment in 1978, Mr. Cole has worked in real estate with his wife, Doris, in Tyler, Texas. The Coles attend the unaffiliated United Church of God Big Sandy congregation.

Dave Havir, pastor of the United Church of God Big Sandy, kicked off the Houston series the Sabbath of Jan. 9 with his sermon "Two Pillars."

The two pillars he referred to are answers to the questions "What is the church?" and "What is a minister?"

The opposite concepts, said Mr. Havir, are two "heresies," which he attacked, stressing that he was criticizing the concepts, not individuals or organizations.

"Everybody who has God's Spirit is the Church of God," he said in answer to the first question.

The corresponding error is to focus on a leader or group.

The second pillar is the understanding that elders are servants of God's people, not part of a military system.

The monthly series in Houston continues March 6-7 with a Christian Renewal Conference featuring Ronald L. Dart of Tyler, Texas, founder of Christian Educational Ministries.

Events later in 1999 will feature Texarkana-based founder of Cornerstone Publications Jim Rector; Ray Wooten, founder of United Christian Ministries and pastor of United Church of God Birmingham; Dixon Cartwright of Big Sandy, publisher of The Journal; and Wes and Linda Hardy White of Dallas.

The Houston Church of God Fellowship usually meets in Katy, on Houston's west side.

Services are typically informal and interactive and begin in late morning, followed by refreshments and fellowship.

Everyone is welcome.
