In Hebrews 6:17-18 we read:
"Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed [it] by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which [it was] impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:" (Hebrews 6:17-18, KJV)
These two things involve the true hope that only the true church of God has. The writer of Hebrews takes the next two chapters to explain in detail these two immutable things.
Notice that Hebrews 7 deals with the greatness of the Melchizedek (Melchizedec) priesthood as opposed to the Aaronic priesthood. The hope for Israel was to be a great physical nation that would lead all nations to keep God’s commandments so they would have great physical blessings.
This is the hope of most every human today. This hope had a physical priesthood to teach God’s laws and offer sacrifices for occasional sins.
But God’s oath was to bring in a better hope—the awesome hope of eternal life as a member of the God family inheriting the earth. This hope is one of the immutable things God says he will accomplish in spiritual Israel:
"I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts; and I will be to them a God and they will be to me a people." (Hebrews 8:10)
David was a man after God’s own heart. God will make us all after His heart. When God gets us through this school we call life, we will be able to say to sin temptation "Been there, done that!!!" |
